Straight answers about what a move costs
How much does a local move cost?
Most local moves are priced by the hour: a crew, a truck, and how long your place takes to load and unload. A typical 1–2 bedroom runs a few hundred to a couple thousand dollars depending on size, stairs, and how much you want them to touch. Our calculator estimates the crew-hours for your home size and adds the truck and travel.
How much does a long-distance move cost?
Once you're past ~100 miles, price is driven by weight and distance, not hours. A 2-bedroom crossing a few states commonly lands in the mid-four-figures; a full 3–4 bedroom coast-to-coast can run five figures, especially in summer. We estimate your shipment weight from home size and scale it by the miles.
When should you just rent a truck yourself?
Honestly? If it's a small local move, you've got a free Saturday, and a friend or two who owe you — a rented truck (a Penske or U-Haul, lift gate if you can get one) often beats hiring pros by a wide margin. The calculator flags this for you when the numbers say DIY probably wins. We'd rather tell you the truth than sell you a move you don't need.
Why is summer more expensive?
Everyone moves between June and August, and at month-end when leases turn over. Demand spikes, crews book out, and prices climb 10–25%. If your dates are flexible, a mid-week move in the off-season is the cheapest ticket in the business.
